If God is loving and all-powerful, why do innocent people suffer? This universal question has challenged many minds and hearts throughout history. Here at Why We Believe TV, we merge faith with reason to tackle this complex issue. Today, we’re exploring: Why does God allow bad things to happen to good people?
You are not alone if you've ever wrestled with this dilemma; many people share your struggle. The contradiction between a loving God and suffering can shake one's beliefs.
Just in case you're wondering why we're covering this topic again, I want to draw the clear distinction that our previous blogs covered (1) whether God exist based on suffereing and evil and (2) if God is good, why did He command so many atrocities in the Old Testatment. So in this blog, we aren't answering the question of God's existence, nor are we questioning God's judgement in the Old Testament, but rather today we are answering the question of what God's will in our life today.

Are There Really "Good People"?
When we ask the question: Why would a good God allow bad things to happen to good people. We must first note that the term "good" often relies on comparisons. You might think you are a better person than someone else or feel frustrated when hardships arise despite your good deeds. However, is the comparison accurate? Should we be measuring ourselves against others, or are we supposed to aim for the standard set by Jesus?
The Bible reminds us in Isaiah 64:6: “All our righteousness is as filthy rags.” This tells us that even our best intentions and actions often fall short of perfection. For example, studies show that while 75% of people believe they are above average in kindness, this perception can often mislead us about our true nature. It’s clear that our focus should not be on surpassing one another but rather on striving to emulate Christ.
When Life Hurts and God Feels Distant
Feeling abandoned during tough times is common and deeply sincere. Many have asked, “If God cares, why did He let this happen?” It’s not unusual to feel anger toward God or guilt for feeling this way. Some experience emotional fatigue—not necessarily suicidal but despair, abandonment, and/or believing their existence lacks significance.
If this sounds familiar, know that you’re in good company. Bringing your authentic feelings to God is encouraged. The Psalms are rich with human emotion—anger, sadness, bewilderment—showing that honesty in prayer is welcomed. For instance, Psalm 22 begins with, “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?” This raw expression reflects an essential reality—God can handle your truth.
Purpose in Suffering
Every creator has a purpose for their creation. Steve Jobs once noted, “You can’t connect the dots looking forward; you can only connect them looking backward.” This invites us to reflect on suffering and how, often, it leads to growth, determination, and empathy.
Consider this: after facing loss, many develop resilience and a profound understanding of compassion. A study by the University of California found that individuals who experience adversity often report increased empathy and connection to others. Although suffering can cloud our view, many discover clarity and meaning in hindsight, seeing how it strengthens their faith, improves their character and prepares them for purpose.
The Role of Free Will
The concept of free will is another important aspect. God has allowed us to make our choices, which brings both blessing and burdens. Whether it's a personal decision to act selfishly or the decisions of others to act selfishly that affects us directly or indirectly, cause and effect echoes through families, friendships, and communities having a rippling impact on others.
The Mystery of God’s Plan
It's vital to recognize that some aspects of God’s plan remain a mystery. In Isaiah 55:8-9, the Scriptures assure us: “For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways.” This verse highlights that God’s understanding and plan encompass so much more than our limited human perspective.
While we may grapple with why certain tragedies happen, we can trust that God’s plan surpasses our immediate understanding. For example, consider the story of Joseph in Genesis. Sold into slavery by his brothers, he faced immense suffering but ultimately played a critical role in saving nations from famine. It wasn’t until later that the purpose behind his trials became clear.

Finding Hope Amidst Suffering
In hard times, seeking hope is crucial. Many find strength through faith, engaging in prayer, community support, and scripture. Research shows that those who attend religious services regularly report higher levels of emotional well-being and resilience.
Connecting with others on similar journeys can bring comfort. Support groups, church communities, and online forums can provide an invaluable lifeline. By sharing your experiences and listening to others, the sense of connection can remind you that you are not navigating your struggles alone.
The Promise of Redemption
Ultimately, the Christian faith assures us of redemption. Jesus' suffering and resurrection illustrate that pain is not the final chapter. In Romans 8:28, we read that “all things work together for good to those who love God.” This powerful promise encourages us to trust that even in shadowed moments, God orchestrates events for our ultimate benefit.
Reflect on those who’ve experienced personal losses yet emerged stronger, emphasizing the belief that God can bring good from pain. For instance, parents who lose a child often find themselves propelled to advocate for others going through similar grief, transforming their pain into purpose.
In Search of Answers
The question of why bad things happen to good people is intricate and layered. While we may not uncover all the answers, we can find reassurance in understanding that suffering has purpose.
By acknowledging the significance of free will, recognizing the potential for growth in suffering, and accepting the mystery of God's plan, we can face life’s challenges with renewed faith and hope. Remember, it’s essential to express your feelings and seek support during tough times.
As we continue to explore these significant questions, let's hold on to the promise of redemption and the comforting notion that God is always with us, even in our pain.
